Objectives:
Call to Teaching My grandmother believed in "eun-hae", a Korean concept that those who are able to should grant assistance to those in need, and return it to those who help us. My reason for teaching is simple: my students' stories give me hope. Any "eun-hae" I give is given back ten-fold. I invest my time and consume myself in my work because I am entrusted with something priceless: futures. |
Vision for Teaching and Learning
"... the teacher's task is first to nourish and assist, to watch, encourage, guide, induce, rather than to interfere, prescribe, or restrict." - Maria Montessori Our children are born with an insatiable desire to learn, and possess a natural capacity for creativity. Maria Montessori was ahead of her time: she bemoaned the rigid, systems of mass education. Montessori believed that students should learn to think critically, work collaboratively, and act boldly: skills students need in this Common Core era. My students are not "human capital" to be exploited. They are individuals with different needs, backgrounds, dreams, and abilities. Students need to acquire real-world skills that enable them to become citizens and serve as genuine community members. As Dewey says, "learning in the process of living is the deepest form of freedom." |
